Paris's iconic landmark, the Eiffel Tower, is made of over 7,300 tonnes of wrought iron. While it appears completely rigid, it actually changes height and shape depending on the weather!

The Physics of Thermal Expansion

In hot summer temperatures exceeding 35ยฐC (95ยฐF), the iron structure absorbs substantial heat energy. As atoms vibrate more vigorously, the metal experiences thermal expansion, pushing the tower's height upward by up to 15 centimeters (6 inches)!

Conversely, in freezing winter conditions, the iron contracts and the tower shrinks by several centimeters. In addition, because the side facing the Sun heats up more than the shaded side, the top of the Eiffel Tower actually tilts by up to 15 cm away from the Sun!
