A Day on Venus is Longer Than a Year on Venus

In our solar system, time behaves in truly bizarre ways. One of the most fascinating examples is the planet Venus, where a single day lasts longer than an entire Venusian year!

How Does This Happen?

A "day" is the time it takes for a planet to complete one rotation on its axis. Venus rotates extremely slowlyβ€”taking about 243 Earth days to rotate just once. On the other hand, a "year" is the time it takes to orbit the Sun. Venus completes an orbit around the Sun in just 225 Earth days!

This means that Venus completes an entire year before a single day and night cycle is finished. Even more mind-boggling: Venus rotates in retrograde (backwards), meaning the Sun rises in the west and sets in the east!
